Doug’s favorite subjects since middle school have been social studies and history. Initially, he had planned to become a writer until the passion and compelling storytelling of a history teacher in his first quarter of college inspired him to immediately change his major to history. He went on to finish his BA in history and Bible at the University of Northwestern-Saint Paul, where his professors encouraged him to pursue graduate school in ancient history or Bible. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his MA in Hebrew and Semitic Studies (a program focused on the languages and literatures of ancient Canaan and Syria, including the Old Testament). While in Madison, Doug worked as a graduate teaching assistant and lecturer for several years, guiding college students through classes on Judaism, Jewish cultural history, biblical poetry, and religion. During those same years, he worked as the Christian Education director for Monona Oaks Community Church in Monona, Wisconsin. At the church, he taught classes for adults and young people on various topics related to the Bible and Christian theology. Since 2011, he has worked at Faithlife Corporation, the makers of Logos Bible Software, producing resources designed to help people improve their Bible study. In 2018, Doug finished his PhD in Hebrew with the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is interested in the history of the ancient world and especially its connections with the world of the Bible. He also enjoys reading about the history of the Church and the broader subject of religion’s role in world history.
